Helpfull Hints

QuarkXPress®

Macintosh: QuarkXPress® 4.0 or earlier

  1. When selecting fonts, be sure to select PostScript Type 1 fonts using Adobe, Agfa or Bitstream fonts. We are unable to accept Apple® System fonts (Chicago, Geneva, Monaco and New York). It is important that you send both your printer and screen fonts for the family of fonts used.
  2. Never use the style palette to modify fonts.
  3. Along with your file sent for placement, we need the supporting graphic file(s) given the same name as the graphic(s) in your document. (Changing the name after placement will make the graphic come up as "missing" or "modified" when read by our imagesetters.) Place graphics at 100%.
  4. Color all text and graphics according to the enclosed color specifications for the type of product you are ordering.

IBM-PC: QuarkXPress® 4.0 or earlier

  1. When selecting fonts, you must use only fonts listed in the back of our Commercial album. If you are using fonts not listed in our album, outlines must be created in an illustration program before placing into your Quark® document.
We prefer placed images to be in a TIFF format. Color all text and graphics according to the enclosed color specifications for the type of product you are ordering.

Freehand®

Macintosh: Freehand® and IBM-PC: Freehand® for Windows

  1. Be sure to "convert to paths" all text characters in your document.
  2. Color all text and graphics according to the enclosed color specifications for the type of product you are ordering.
  3. If you are using an imported graphic in your Freehand® document, be sure to include the original graphic file. Place graphics at 100%.
  4. Export the file as an EPS.

Adobe Photoshop®

Macintosh: Adobe Photoshop® and IBM-PC: Adobe Photoshop® for Windows

  1. Files must be saved as a Macintosh® TIFF with LZW compression, or sent as a .PDF.
  2. Do not color an image in Photoshop® (for spot printing or Creative Colors).
  3. We recommend that you submit black and white bitmap images at 1200 dpi and grayscale images at 300 dpi for standard spot printing.
For full-color printing, CMYK images need to be submitted at 300 dpi. Images that come to Carlson Craft at lower resolutions than what is recommended will be output as sent. We will not raise the resolution here.
  4. Color all text and graphics according to the enclosed color specifications for the type of product you are ordering.
  5. All files need to be submitted at the size being used for printing.
  6. If bleeds are needed, allow 1/8" on each applicable side. Please make sure that any text in your layout still maintains the required margin even when the graphic bleeds.
Reminder for full-color printing Color all text and graphics using Process CMYK color only. If RGB or other non-CMYK colors are used in your files, the necessary conversion to CMYK will change the appearance of the colors when we print, sometimes dramatically.

Adobe Illustrator®

Macintosh: Adobe Illustrator® and IBM-PC: Adobe Illustrator® for Windows

  1. Change all text into "outlines&" in your document.
  2. Color all text and graphics according to the enclosed color specifications for the type of product you are ordering.

Corel Draw®

When creating your files, please create only one page per document. Pages after the first one are lost when exported.
  2. Color all text and graphics according to the enclosed color specifications for the type of product you are ordering.
  3. Place all graphics at 100%.
  4. Export as an ".eps" file.
  5. Always select the "text to curves" option to eliminate font information from your file.
  6. If the graphics used contain patterns or gradients, export your file as a Photoshop® tiff document, saved with at least 600 dpi for line art.
Additional requirements for full-color printing Color all text and graphics using Process CMYK color. Be sure to use the "Accurate Color Correction" feature if you are using version 7.0. If RGB or other non-CMYK colors are used in your files, the necessary conversion to CMYK will change the appearance of the colors when we print, sometimes dramatically.
PLEASE NOTE:With any version of Corel Draw, you will need to contact Corel Corporation and be sure you have all the current builds and revisions installed in order to export files properly. If you have these current revisions, export as "Adobe Illustrator.ai".
